Sea Musgo: What is and what the health benefits are ?

What exactly is the sea moss? It's everywhere on TikTok and supplement brands bet on this ingredient. But is it really good?

The sea moss is fashionable. In TikTok, this term accumulates more than 1.3 billion views. In the US version of the TV show Shark Tank, Mark Cuban and Kevin Hart recently invested in a company selling sea moss gel. And in many high-end grocery stores, such as Erewhon of Los Angeles, this gelatinous substance occupies a place of honor alongside cold-pressed juices in the refrigerated goods aisle.

But what exactly is the sea moss and why is it all over the place? And, more importantly, are your supposed health benefits really true, which supposedly range from weight loss to immune reinforcement and radiant skin?

What is the marine moss and what is it for?

Marine moss, also known as Irish moss, Irish sea moss or by its scientific name, Chondrus crispus, is a sea vegetable shaped like other types of edible algae, such as nori, algae kelp, wakame and kombu.

Marine moss is a specific type of red seaweed rich in nutrients such as magnesium, iodine, iron, folic acid, calcium and vitamins, explains Kylene Bogden, a licensed dietitian and specializing in sports nutrition at the FwdFuel Institute. It can be eaten raw, but it is also supplied dry, in capsules, powder or gel-shaped.

Eating marine moss is not a new trend: Coastal communities have been using it for centuries for various medicinal, nutritional and cultural purposes, explains Eddie McAleer, a dietitian and advisor to the firm Moss. Commercially, carrageate, a derivative of marine moss, is usually used as a thickener in processed foods such as ice cream, jelly and soups, as well as in toothpastes, lotions and gums.

 

 

What does the sea moss know?

To write this story, I bought a 450-gram jar of sea moss gel that cost me almost $40 and, because of its high price, I expected it to know something. It had a pleasant consistency, similar to that of the aloe vera, but it had practically no flavor; perhaps just a slight touch of seawater. According to Bodgen, this is exactly how quality marine moss should know: The fake tends to be saltier. Authentic sea moss will always be priced higher due to its laborious collection process. But it's important to know that you get what you're really paying for.

What benefits does Sea Moss or sea moss have?

Marine moss is said to improve energy, thyroid function, digestion and skin health, Bogden says, but also notes that there is still not much scientific evidence to support these claims.

 

However, a multitude of clinical trials have been conducted studying the benefits of other types of algae, closely related to sea moss, and the few initial studies that have been carried out on marine moss using animals have shown promising results.

Although there are not many studies in humans that demonstrate the benefits of marine moss, we know that the nutrients found in the marine moss have been related to health and longevity, explains certified nutritionist and dietitian Jennifer Scheinman, advisor to Timeline Nutrition. These nutrients include vitamin B12, calcium, iodine, magnesium, potassium, calcium, amino acids, Omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, iron and many more.

Marine Must and Its Effect on the Immune System

As already said, there is not enough evidence to show that sea moss consumption improves overall health, including the immune system. But studies have shown that the consumption of other types of algae can strengthen the immune system and even help protect against viral and bacterial infections: Seaweed contains numerous components that can exert antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects, directly and indirectly, by improving the intestinal microbiota, according to a study examining the potential of algae to fight COVID infections.

However, the same study pointed out that the bioavailability of algae nutrients depends on various factors, so a prescriptive recommendation could not be made. Since the jury has not yet spoken, it is probably best that you follow a nutritious and balanced diet containing known immune system enhancers (such as turmeric) and adopt practices that favor a healthy immune system, such as sleeping enough.

Marine Muske and its Health Benefits of Thyroid

Marine moss is a natural source of iodine, a vital micronutrient for the health of the thyroid gland. Since the body does not produce iodine on its own, it is essential to obtain it through food, and it can prevent hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones to regulate metabolism.

 

But experts warn that those affected by thyroid disorders should consult a medical professional before embarking on the adventure of feeding on sea moss, especially if they are already taking thyroid medication. The sea moss comes directly from the ocean, so it is affected by its ever-changing environment, McAleer says. Conssuming large amounts constantly should be done with caution due to the high levels of iodine that can be found in ocean waters.

Marine Must and Digestive Health

Marine moss contains fiber and prebiotics, which favor intestinal health. One study found that marine moss actually has multiple prebiotic effects, such as the influence on the composition of microbial gut communities, improved intestinal health and immune modulation - but it is important to note that this study was only performed in rats.

Other studies on humans, in which algae were used instead of sea moss, conclude that further research must be done: "There is an absence of data available in the literature on dietary intervention studies in humans with polysaccharides, polyphenols and sea algae peptides ," said a recent study. So while the sea moss is likely not to harm your gut health, in terms of proven benefits, the jury has not yet decided.

Sea mosa and skin benefits

We all know that the consumption of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and amino acids is essential for skin health, so it makes sense that nutrient-rich sea moss consumption is beneficial. Studies suggest, however, that bioactive algae compounds may be useful in preventing hyperpigmentation, photoaging and acne, but these studies have only proven the topical application of this compound.

In another study on marine moss collected in the Red Sea, an impressive list of flavonoids, polyphenols and tannins, as well as "notifiable," sufficient to recommend that the study be further studied for Chondrus crisspus extract for its pharmacological application in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, in particular human cancer.
